Hire Junior Engineering Managers

The first genuinely non-technical-output role on the ladder, and the transition most organisations handle badly. Promoting the strongest individual contributor is the default and frequently the wrong call: the skills barely overlap, and a reluctant manager damages a team faster than a vacancy does.

What actually separates a good hire here

Ask about someone they managed out, and how they handled it. Managers who have done the job have a specific, uncomfortable answer that shows care for the person and clarity about the standard. Candidates who have never had a difficult conversation have not really managed.

The common mistake

Hiring on technical seniority alone. Ask instead what they did when a strong engineer became disengaged - the answer reveals whether they actually manage or just review code.

Questions worth asking in a first screen

  1. 1How do you know your team is healthy without asking them directly?
  2. 2Describe a time you pushed back on a deadline. What happened?
  3. 3How do you decide who gets the interesting work?
