HR tips

  • Avoid quick returns — a night shift followed by a morning shift causes fatigue and errors
  • Publish rosters in writing and on notice boards, not only on WhatsApp
  • Keep a cab and escort log for night transport
  • Rotate night shifts fairly so the same people are not always on nights

Shift hours, night work and employment of women at night are regulated by law and state rules, which may require conditions or permissions. Verify these and your standing orders with a legal adviser before adopting this policy.

Frequently asked questions

Is night shift allowance mandatory in India?+

No general law fixes a night shift allowance for all employees, but many companies pay one and some settlements or standing orders require it. State the amount clearly in your policy.

Can women work night shifts in India?+

Yes, subject to their consent and the safety conditions laid down under applicable law and state rules, such as safe transport and adequate security. Check your state's requirements.

How much notice should be given for a shift change?+

Publish rosters well in advance — many employers give at least a week. Standing orders or state rules may require notice of changes in shift working, so check what applies to you.
